A Brief Guide to Buying Designer Jeans
By Caroline R Taylor
The number of options and brands is good news for consumers, especially for men who haven't always been given a huge choice when buying jeans in the past.

How to choose a designer brand

The first consideration when buying a pair of designer jeans for most people is the brand name. Some shoppers have a specific brand loyalty -- they may only buy Diesel jeans, for example. Others may buy based on design or style when they see the jeans in the shop or online. Brands here all appeal to different people. It is thought that younger consumers will go for brands such as Diesel, G-Star and Evisu -- these brands are well-known for their ranges of street and leisure wear. Older consumers may well want to buy into a broader designer name so may, for example, buy Prada, Versace or Armani jeans. And, to a certain extent the jeans at the top of the 'must-have' pile at any given time will depend on what is happening in the fashion, music, film and TV worlds.

Choosing the right kinds of jeans

If a consumer isn't too bothered about which brand name they eventually buy, they may well buy based upon on style, look or cost (there's no better bargain than discount designer clothes!). A lot of the time consumers will buy on the basis of how well the jeans fit and how good they look when they are on. It should be remembered here that good looks

are not as important as comfort in the long run -- although try telling that to your teenage son!

Not every single pair of designer jeans will look good on every type of body. There can be quite a lot of differences in the cut, styling and detailing. So, a pair of button fly bootleg jeans may look great on one guy but not on another -- even if he is technically the same size. Some people find that certain designer brands look better on them than others and some styles in a designer range work better than others in the range. So, a bit of experimenting may help here.

Another issue to consider here is where the jeans will be worn and how. Some jeans are specifically designed for casual wear and others can be used for more formal occasions. Jeans also comes in all kinds of finishes and colours. Some people like to buy regular dark blue denim jeans whilst others like to go for a different look with faded, distressed, stone-wash or 'dirty' styles. Again this is down to personal preference.

Another differentiator is the style of jeans. In general terms consumers can choose from straight leg, slim fit, baggy fit, boot leg, comfy fit and hipster styles although there are a lot of variations here. Again, the ultimate decision may be made on a mix of comfort, preference and where / how the jeans will be worn.

Conclusion

Bear in mind -- if buying designer jeans online -- that not being able to try them on isn't an issue. The you simply need to check the measurements of the jeans you like against your own measurements. Or, as an alternative, you can check them against a current pair of jeans that fit well. If in doubt, you can always physically try them on in your local department store or brand outlet before buying online. Either way, this will help ensure a good fit -- get this right and the jeans will of course look even better on you than they do in the store!
